In lecture 12 some of the pornstars were described as being forced into this occupation, because they had very little options. I always thought of Hugh Hefner being the Godfather of the nude magazine industry, but after hearing the lecture I learned that he isn’t. Hefner didn’t invent the industry he just perfected it. In lecture 10 we learned that Esquire magazine and another were developed in the 1930′s were sold at newsstands for 25 and 50 cents. The problem these magazines faced were that they were in competition to become racier and more hardcore.

I think the average “urban male” is not interested in hardcore pictures but rather just looking at a beautiful nude woman’s body. I always hear people commenting on how nobody “reads” Playboy, they only look at the pictures. I find the articles in Playboy interesting, the same with the interviews with celebrities. They give the modern male tips on dating, fashion, cars, music and the latest electronics. The centerfolds are what makes the consumer buy the magazine but the articles alongside the pictures keeps the reader form putting the magazine down. The other cool stuff found in Playboy are the risque cartoons that were mentioned to be in the earlier “nude magazines” from the 30′s. They can be defined as “mature comics”. Playboy dominates the market for mature magazines and the reason I think is because men like the classiness found in the Playboy product, it really is a gentlemen’s magazine.

The explanation of the differences in XX and XXX were interesting to me. XX rating was penetration and a XXX rating was ejaculation. It seems that the only people that this would matter to were the people buying a porn movie. When most people see the rating on a porno all it says it mature content or adult content.

On the topic of cable providers or satelite systems providing porn movies, I am a DirecTV subscriber and it does offer the “softcore” movie channels like playboy and the spice channel it also offers more hardcore channels such as vivid. I’m not sure if Larry Flynt is associated with any of these channels but it certainly did not bring the stock value of DirecTV down. In my opinion these options make directv a better choice than adelphia.

A closer look at Sin City

Each day I look at the new posts I always come across a post on the city of Las vegas and people are always praising how good it is and how nice it is to have a city with its own rules. It is true that Vegas does have a good economy but the only people that benefit are the hotel and casino owners! When it was being constructed Vegas was originally designed to be a “pit stop” for the boys in the service on their way to the west coast. Sort of like an anything goes kinda place to thank the boys. A lot of the funds and building projects came from the Mafia when Vegas started and they new that sex, drugs, drinking and gambling were the number 1 moneymakers, and they still are. This is the reason why Nevada has no laws restricting gambling and prostitution in some areas. There is also a reason why Sin City is in Nevada, it’s isolated by miles and miles of desert.

While it is true that Vegas does attract billions in profits each year, it has to be a shitty place to live. The only jobs are valeting cars, serving cocktails or dealing cards. A great place to visit but you would never want to live there.

I think your judgement of Larry Flynt is a bit biased. From a male college student’s perspective I find Mr. Flynt to be a true pioneer. In the post WWII culture many “old fashioned morals” have been challenged. Larry Flynt had the same idea that travels through the head of many men, that is to sell something that reveals naked women, in an explicit manner. The only difference is he had the funds and ways to do it. It could be true that these “pink shots” do demean women but to say that they cause rape and violence is absurd. The facts are that these magazines are viewed by guys who enjoy looking at a fine female body, whether its at work or just some good bathroom reading material. And yes maybe hanging a centerfold on their locker at work.

The belief that it influences the thinking of male college students is way off. I’ve seen the same behavior in just as many females. I mean this is college, you dont have to hump everything in sight but nobody says you have to enter every encounter with the opposite sex with marriage on your mind. It’s my belief that many college male’s want to get married and have a family one day, its a great thing. But that can wait until they graduate and work someplace where they can keep their top desk drawer filled with a bunch of 5-7 year old copies of Hustler.
